A brief history

The format was created in 1986 in 1986 by Aldus Corporation, the TIFF format was created in 1986 based upon suggestions from scanner manufacturers and software developers. The primary goal was to create a standard for rasterized files of scanned images for all scanner suppliers.

Later, it included support with grayscale or color.

In 1988, version 5.0 was released which had support for color palette images as well as LZW compression.

The current version of the TIFF format dates from the year 1992 (!) and contains support to CMYK as well as YCbCr color images, and the JPEG compression method.
In 1994, Adobe Systems acquired Aldus and is maintaining the specification ever since.
